Joshua H. Bates Primary and Secondary Sources
Adorable has to be your first thought, right?
My high school students made more comments about this photograph than any other I use. Photography is one of the most intriguing of all the primary sources, and no wonder. We are all visual learners. Though our capacity to learn visually does decrease as other means of learning increase in our lives, it is still a powerful method of inputting information. Consider what you see in this photograph. Here is my list:
1. Toddler boy in a white-trimmed, possibly black skirt (My male students are appalled).
2. Toddler boy with a flouncy shirt
3. Toddler boy with a large, patterned bow tie
4. Toddler boy with high-topped, leather, laced shoes
5. Toddler boy with blond hairs, left part, styled swirl to the right
6. Toddler boy with a serious face, looking straight at the camera
7. Toddler boy with his right arm resting on the arm of the chair, left hand down
8. Wicker chair with rolled arms and a possibly rectangular backrest
9. Studio backdrop with a molted appearance and a fern
10. "Ellis and Goodwin 64 West Second South St, Salt Lake City"
What did you notice that I missed?
What clues are there to approximate the date of the photograph?
Does this company still exist?
